Podiatry vs Chiropody.. What’s the difference?
This is a question that gets asked a lot in our clinics, there are actually Two answers.
The first is the truth, there is officially no difference between a Podiatrist and a Chiropodist. The name changed in the early 90s to fall in line with the rest of the world, but, unlike Opal Fruits/Starburst, the change hasn’t been widely advertised.
The other is more the way the names are perceived. “Chiropodists” are generally known as those who just do routine basic foot care (nails, hard skin, corns) while Podiatrists are known for more advanced wound care, biomechanics and rehabilitation.
Alongside these names, there are also Foot Healthcare Practitioners. FHP’s do have a big role in the foot-care industry. If you are just looking for standard basic footcare, an FHP may be able to offer you this service. They can not be called Podiatrists or Chiropodists however, due to the very different types of qualification attained. If in any doubt, look for the HCPC Registered Logo for Podiatry.
